Cyclists under 18 years of age are required by law to wear a helmet; those over 18 are encouraged to wear one for their own safety. The fine for not wearing a helmet is $75.

It is strongly recommended to purchase a solid U-Lock, and to use it at all times when on campus or in the city.

Average bicycles can be purchased for new at Walmart or Canadian Tire for a reasonable price ($100 - $400); for more professional bikes, the closest location is King City Cycles in Uptown Waterloo. Used bicycles can be purchased from Recycle Cycle (in Kitchener), Kijiji, or the Bike Center’s Auction (mid-September) at the SLC. Both UW’s Bike Center and Recycle Cycle are recommended for bike maintenance and parts.

The Bike Center in conjunction with the Turnkey Desk offer the Yellow Bike Program. By signing a waiver and paying a fee of $20 per term students and staff of the university can sign out one of these bikes for a duration of 24 hours.
